Thanks to a collaboration with Wwep - World Wide Education Project (its aim is to create access to quality education for teachers and pupils in developing, disaster and conflict affected countries), our organisation is now focusing on a new program to help the children of the Free School Under the Bridge, providing them benches and desks, where they could study safely.
Usually the children study under the railway bridge in New Delhi, in very poor conditions. No chairs, no desks, no boards. They sit on the ground or on dirty carpets.

The story
One of the priorities of our organisation is to help children in need. In India we collaborate with the Free School Under The Bridge, launched by Rajesh Kumar Sharma with the help of Laxmi Chandra and other volunteers and teachers. One day in 2008 shopkeeper Rajesh Kumar Sharma spotted children playing in the dirt as he walked to the train station.
Their families were too poor to send them to school or the children had no ID card or birth certification, so they are out of government shemes.
Together with Laxmi Chandra, a post graduate science teacher, Rajesh decided to teach the children the basics in reading and writing, maths, science, geography, Hindi and English.
Starting with two children 7 years ago, Rajesh and Laxmi has come a long way.
The school under the bridge in Shakarpur now has over 200 children between the ages 3 and 16.
“Free School Under The Bridge” is the only way for these children to receive an education, to learn and to improve themselves. It is run only by volunteers.
Through named and unnamed donors and volunteers the situation for the children turns into better.

Our programs for the children of the Free School Under The Bridge
On May 2014 we donated to the 200 children of the Free School Under The Bridge cookies and sweets for 4 days.
On June 2015 we started to raise funds to provide desks and chairs to the children at the Free School Under The Bridge.
This project was identified within the needs assessment study last year between Wwep and Rajesh Kumar Sharma.

Safety and more information about the project
Rajesh felt that the security of storing them at night could be a problem. Therefore Wwep and Rajesh looked at designing some which we would fix in place on a semi-permeant basis. The desks and benches are made from metal so are vandal proof when left over night. The plan is for them to be built by a local tradesman therefore cutting down on any import costs and providing a small boost to the local economy. The estimated cost of this project is around €500.
